The Gabarron Foundation and The Queen Sofia Children’s Art Museum (Spain), along with other organizations, such as Solidarity Against Cancer and Norte Castilla Newspaper, announce The International Art Contest for Children, having as its theme:


With a shout of hope from young children, we want to make a deep impact by creating collective awareness about the relationship between childhood, cancer, and the social acceptance of the disease.

The Queen Sofia Children's Art Museum was inaugurated on November 7, 2002, and unveiled by her Majesty Queen Sofia of Spain, Honorary President of the Museum. It was established as the first International Children's Art Museum in Spain, with a rich international legacy of over 45,000 works of art by children from over 50 countries

The joint call for this Art Contest from various organizations, with different fields of influence (cultural, social, and media), empowers this year’s theme, “Defeat Cancer with Hope and Heart” (“DCHH”)

General Rules of the Art Contest

Contestants: Children between 5 and 14 years old are eligible to participate in the following categories, regardless of their nationality: Child, ages 5 through 9, and Junior, ages 9 through 14.  

Theme: The motto of this contest, “DCHH” (Defeat Cancer with Hope and Heart), focuses on the willpower and determination to defeat cancer, and understanding the special impact of the disease on children, their social and family environment, and on being in the hospital.

Size Limitation: All the drawings must be letter size or A4. The material could be paper or cardboard –thick enough for those using mixed media. Works cannot be glued nor framed to any other support.

Techniques: Eligible media are watercolor, acrylic, oil, color pencils, markers, ink, crayons, and collage.

Inscription: The drawing must be clearly identified with the author’s personal data on its verso or on the inscription form. The submission of the artwork validates the child’s participation.

Shipment: All artwork must be sent to the Gabarron Foundation in NY, individually or in groups (associations, schools, organizations, etc). Alternatively, they could be sent by email, though the original must be sent if the artwork is selected.

Dates: Artwork can be sent beginning November 1, 2010, and cannot be received later than November 26, 2010.

Jury: The jury is composed of artists, individuals associated with the art world, contest collaborators, and professionals involved in childhood cancer. The jury will meet in Spain on December 12, 2010, to designate the finalists and winners.

Requirements: Remittance of artwork is considered as acceptance of all the contest rules. The drawings will belong to the Museum and the artist will release all rights to the work.

Awards: Among all contestants, six drawings will be selected; three in each category of Child and Junior. An award in each category, chosen by participating hospitals, will also be given, as well as two audience’s choice awards.  All finalists will receive a diploma, and their work will be included in the art catalog.
